Highbridge Chives

The Croton Aqueduct originally spanned the Harlem River. During the mid to late 19th century, the area transformed into a suburban retreat for the wealthy, who constructed grand homes with views of the Harlem River. The names of these families and their estates are now preserved in Highbridge's north-south avenues, such as Ogden Avenue. In the 1970s, amidst the city's financial crisis, pedestrian access to the bridge was shut down, leading to its neglect. However, a reconstruction project was initiated in 2015 and successfully completed with the reopening of the bridge in 2019.
